Samantha Kingston only has one thing on her mind when she goes to school on February 12th, how many roses she will get and if her longtime crush, now boyfriend, will do the deed.
Sam is popular and gets away with almost everything, but it wasn't always like that. Yes, she used to be nerdy and not popular at all. She was basically at the bottom of the totem pole, but being friends with the right people has its advantages. Lindsey, the leader of the group. Elody, smart and is always making everyone laugh with her witty banter. Sam, pretty witty herself, but is a follower not a leader.
In school Sam collects her roses from her boyfriend, Rob, and her friends. Sam's day otherwise consists of her flirting with the young trig teacher, copying answers from Lauren in chem, and joining her friends in tormenting a classmate they call "psycho".
Throughout the day Sam is often thinking about her relationship with Rob and that she should be happy to be with him, but her old best friend, Kent, seems to have some strange power to disturb her. Kent also invites her to a party at his house. Normally she would decline, but her friends are going, so she has to go too.
Of course you can't go to a party and not be buzzed when you get there, so Sam and her friends were drinking vodka while getting ready (I know, hard core drinkers). During the party words were said and Sam wonders if what Kent and "psycho" said about her were true. While leaving the party, Lindsey said she was still able to drive, but apparently not sober enough, because ya know, they crashed, and Sam dies, but something strange happens. Sam wakes up "the next day", but it's not February 13th, it's February 12th all over again. Naturally, like anyone else in the world, her first instinct was to think she was insane, but as she repeats the day over and over again she begins to change in both subtle and enormous ways. She becomes convinced that she can change the events that happened on that day so she wont have to repeat the day over and over forever. As Sam grapples with this notion, she wonders what is inevitable in life and what can be changed. How much in her life is she truly responsible for?
I must admit that I was a bit put off at the very beginning by Sam and her friends, who appeared to be the typical popular, beautiful mean girls --- shallow characters who have been featured in way too many books.Sam turns out to be a deep thinker as she uncovers layers during the seven days, growing and changing with each cycle. She slowly arrives at enlightenment about her family, friends, classmates, teachers and herself. She also gains a new perspective on life itself --- one that may deeply affect how readers view their own lives.
