Oh my Lord!! I love this book so much. I have read this book before, but at the time I didn't have this blog, so I reread it, and here I am making this review. There are a few spoilers, so if you have not read the book yet, just be prepared.
In this book aliens or the Others come down to Earth and basically kill almost every human. Yikes. No, it's not like in the movies where the invaders use machines that are more advanced, the Others use the planet against the humans. The first wave: Lights out. The Others used an EMP to end all power, so anything that uses a battery or electricity was gone. Bye bye cell phones. The second wave: Surfs up. Like I said before the Others used the planet against the humans, so the Others basically flooded the Earth killing even more people. The third wave: Pestilence. The Others used the birds to spread this terrible illness around. Basically everyone got the illness and it slowly took over the body until it got to the brain and the infected person would literally go insane. The illness was altogether very messy; a lot of blood and bodies building up because they were dying so fast. The fourth wave: Silencer. Before the Others came down they inserted themselves into babies still in the womb. Crazy right, but then when the babies reached puberty they "woke up" and knew that they were something different and they knew what they were "created" to do... kill. Finally the fifth wave: Us. The Others "rescue" kids and train them to become soldiers to kill the Others, but they don't know what they're doing until Ringer figures it out.
Cassie Sullivan is one of the main characters in this book. Her brother is taken away from her and she is willing to do anything to get him back. She is a total badass, but I like how she still gets scared and sleeps with Sammy's bear and her M16 at the same time. Cassie has this huge crush on Ben Parish, who was like the star football player at her school, but she could never talk to him, later she learns that he was taking care of her brother at Camp Haven. Cassie is all alone, and in search of her brother gets injured by getting shot in the leg by a silencer. She is then saved by Evan Walker and he suggests that he help her find her brother. Evan and Cassie fall in love with each other, but then Cassie learns a huge secret about Evan that changes everything, but then it doesn't at the same time.
Ben Parish/Zombie is the other main character. Ben feels really guilty that he ran from his sister when she needed him the most. The last thing he grabbed trying to grab her was her necklace that he keeps on him. Ever since that incident he has felt the need to help and protect everyone that is important to him, especially Ringer and Nugget. Ben is called Zombie because he was one of the few people who got the pestilence and survived. But, because he was so week and fragile he looked and walked like a zombie. Zombie becomes squad leader in Camp Haven because he stood up for Nugget/Sammy, and impressed one of the trainers. Cassie and Ben fianally meet when they are both trying to rescue the same person and help each other out.
All in all I loved this book so much. I loved the relationship between Cassie and Evan and how even though they have secrets they still want to be togther and he is willing to do anything to protect her. I like how Ben is still himself, but different; he has the same smile and the same flirty personality, but he is stronger and tougher.
I recommend this book to anyone.
